Documentation of Teaching Effectiveness

Every semester, students have the opportunity to evaluate my teaching. As well, my colleagues observe one of my classes each year. That data and those reports are available for review in my personnel file in Human Resources.

While student feedback has helped me refine my reading lists and assignments, it’s important to note that several studies have revealed the inherent flaws in using student evaluations of teaching in personnel decisions. SETs cannot assess student learning and often reflect biases against women, minorities, and members of the LGBTQIA community. Read the AAUP article by John W. Lawrence here; or the article from Inside Higher Ed, written by Colleen Flaherty; or the American Sociological Association’s Statement on Student Evaluations of Teaching.
